Juneteenth, which is word meaning June 19th, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. While President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation January 1, 1863, it took more than two years for the news to reach Galveston, Texas. June 19, 1865 is the date which completed the celebration of freedom of enslaved people in America. This date honors the freedom of all people living in the United States.
