About Litter

Common trash from consumer goods makes up the majority of what eventually becomes marine debris, polluting our waterways and oceans. Plastics in the aquatic environment are of increasing concern because of their persistence and effect on the environment, wildlife, and human health.

Town of Bluffton Litter Cleanups

The Town of Bluffton hosts litter cleanups annually with the goal of reducing the volume of trash entering the May River. These annual events attract hundreds of volunteers that help clean up the May River and areas surrounding our waterways.

When Are They?

The Town hosts two river cleanups annually, the May River Cleanup is held in the spring and the River Sweep is held in September. Both events take place at Oyster Factory Park in the heart of Bluffton’s Historic District. Visit the Town’s event calendar for up-to-date information on the Town’s two annual litter cleanups.

How Do I Sign Up?

Residents are not required to sign up in advance of the Town’s litter cleanups, however, if you are interested in learning more, please contact the Town’s Watershed Management Division at (843) 706-4559.

Thank You to Our Partners
